The added feature, dubbed Multi-AZ Deployments, "synchronously replicates" data written to the primary database and adds it to a hot standby database operating in the same region but a different availability zone. If a disaster occurs, Amazon RDS detects it and switches you to the backup database in roughly five minutes.
