Major players form cloud coalition, challenge traditional hardware vendors

EMC, Cisco and VMware form a triple threat
The Virtual Computing Environment coalition, a brainchild of the three companies, will sell what it calls VBlock Infrastructure Packages. vBlock will supposedly transform data centers into private cloud infrastructures and feature Cisco servers, EMC data storage hardware and software and VMware's server management software.

Two new cloud products from IBM
IBM announced the Smart Business Development and Test on IBM Cloud and the Rational Software Delivery Services for Cloud Computing, two new services designed to compete in bringing service-oriented architecture (SOA) test and development to private and public clouds.

Microsoft and Taiwan team up
Microsoft and Taiwan are joining forces on a Software and Services Excellence Center, to be established on the island by the end of 2009 with the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Apparently directed at providing assistance to the country's electronic firms in developing cloud computing products and services, its value remains to be proven.

Google and Los Angeles: Perfect together?
The city of Los Angeles' $7.2 billion contract with Google will see the migration of 30,000 users and archived data over to Google's email infrastructure. L.A. can receive $1.2 million in discounts if this deal leads to further Google cloud business in California.

Talking shop with RightScale
RightScale's customers gathered at a user group meeting in Santa Clara to discuss some common cloud computing issues, and the company revealed a portion of its roadmap plans.

IBM to teach about the cloud
Seventeen worldwide academic institutions, from New York University to Qatar University, are participating in IBM's attempt to pitch students, researchers and IT personnel on cloud computing (IBM's version) known as the Cloud Academy.

Big names processing data in the cloud
Financial firm The Hartford Financial Services Group and pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson have committed their IT future to the cloud. While still in early stages of adoption, there is no doubt they will be heavy consumers in public cloud as IT reinvestment needs arise.
