Bring your own cloud (BYOC) increases employee productivity, reduces costs and is a method to conduct business faster and easier. However, it can also pose significant security and system stability risks if security and management policies are not in place or adhered to. It's well advertised what the risks are, but what about the rewards? It's possible the risks are risks regardless of the infrastructure. However, the rewards of BYOC for developers, architects and other engineering roles are tremendous.

BYOC invigorates coding and design by spurring independent thought and innovation. Creating unique answers and enhancing application design are important for business growth in a fast-moving Web and mobile market. Innovation and creativity help companies retain talented resources by offering employees a world of opportunity to add value to the business' bottom line.

Spurring innovation

Nothing is worse than droning along using tools that don't meet company needs or force users to do extra, useless work.

In many software development organizations, employees often spend time using duplicate tools for development, tracking and management. It's exhausting and a waste of time to enter duplicate information because one tool doesn't do it all. BYOC allows them to think independently and use the tools that work best for the software applications being designed and coded. Independent function and thought is a breath of fresh air in corporate development. Employees learn to function outside the box and outside their role. That's good for technology and business because new ideas, new methods and new functionality drive business distinction and success. There are so many Web- and mobile-software-producing organizations, it's essential companies set themselves apart and offer unique applications.

Improving the bottom line

For many organizations, employees' storing data or using personal cloud applications is no less secure than when employees store data on personal laptops or thumb drives. Employees transport laptops daily and carry thumb drives in their pockets. Both can be left at airport security or in vehicles. Both can be stolen and encryption can be broken. Granted, cloud data may attract more attention from hackers because there's more data in a single location. However, most data breaches or losses don't originate from cloud applications but rather from corporate networks, data centers, or the loss or theft of a device. Improve your bottom line by keeping security alive and updated across the organization.

Use BYOC to add growth to the business by building new applications that are user- and multi-device-friendly. Build business by innovating and bringing new functionality to the market. Use BYOC to build in disaster recovery. Implement employee-driven self-service tools that create and support independent thinking and encourage, support and enhance employee productivity.

BYOC allows organizations to distinguish their product and differentiate themselves from the herd. In this way, organizations enhance their bottom line, stay ahead of the competition and retain talented development resources.
